"Freedom Through Knowledge" block print honors Martin Sostre and Lorenzo Kom’boa Ervin, two figures whose lives and work demonstrate how access to knowledge can become a tool of survival, resistance, and self-liberation under confinement. This is a special edition print that raises funds for Books Through Bars. Each print purchase raises $10 that goes towards helping the incarcerated receive requested books that are not available in prisons or prison libraries. Both Men are shown reading, with chains breaking from an open book meant to be an explicit rejection of censorship, isolation, and intellectual control inside of prisons.
The text “Freedom Through Knowledge” and “Education for All” frame the piece as a statement: books are not privileges, they are lifelines.
Printing technique: The image is transferred using traditional relief printing methods, with each impression done manually, the end result of each print showcases subtle variations that make every print unique. The paper is natural mulberry tree fiber, giving it a soft texture, visible inclusions, and natural irregular fibers that reflect its handmade origin.
