This hand-carved block printed patch depicting Fred Hampton, is a special edition print that raises funds for Books Through Bars. Each print purchase raises $10 that goes towards helping prisoners receive requested books that are not available in prisons or prison libraries.

Fred Hampton was a grassroots organizer, educator, revolutionary voice, and member of the Black Panther Party. Hampton was a 21-year-old community leader in Chicago who helped build multiracial coalitions, organized free breakfast programs for thousands of children, and advocated for communities to control institutions rather than government as it has failed time and again.

In 1968, Hampton was arrested in Chicago on charges related to the alleged theft of ice cream bars and was convicted and sentenced in 1969 to 2–5 years in prison. He served only a short period at the Cook County Jail before being released on appeal bond while the case was under review. He was out on appeal at the time of his murder on December 4, 1969. His arrest occurred during a period when the Black Panther Party was under intense surveillance and infiltration by federal and local authorities. The FBI’s COINTELPRO program targeted Hampton specifically because of his organizing ability and coalition-building effort.
